Listen to the talk
On a cold night in November, 200 design devotees packed into the Today event space to hear category-defying Artist and Illustrator Mr Bingo and Creative Director Michael C. Place discuss how they got started and where they are now.
Taking in moments of triumph — raising 387% of a Kickstarter target — and failure — being blanked by Neville Brody in a nightclub in Hong Kong — they sparred over the importance of adaptability, finding freedom, and the pros and cons of London as a creative centre.
Michael C Place
Michael C. Place is Founder and Creative Director of Build. Prior to this Michael was part of the era defining design studio The Designers Republic.
“We were in this weird kind of world at the birth of electronic music, literally inventing this graphic language that went with it, and that eventually became modern graphic design for music.”
Mr Bingo is an illustrator, artist and speaker. Known for his ongoing Hate Mail campaign, he has worked with The Washington Post, The Mighty Boosh and The New Yorker. He describes himself as having a "slightly smaller than average" head and "girl's arms".
“If you think you’ve made it retire, kill yourself, give up. I’m just going through life constantly trying to better myself and make new things, and at the end of it I’ll die. You can’t ever make it, there’s no such thing.”
